Abney Park: Abney Park has transformed themselves from premier goths of the late 90s into an important leader in the steam punk movement. As a band, they harness the power of all things old and good -- but they are more than just a band: they've got books and graphic novels that tell the story of the Abney Park world. How did this monster evolve? Abney Park formed in 1997, as a darkwave band with industrial influences, and weren't unsuccessful at it -- but soon they moved on to steampunk, where the Abney Park heart truly shines. Singer/found Robert Brown and co took on stage names, complex back stories, and instruments like the accordion and banjolele (that's a banjo and ukulele, for all you noobs). Goggles, top hats, wench dresses, and all the important pieces that have become signature elements steam punk costuming are on display with Abney Park. Abney Park has indeed written the book on, and the anthem for, steam punk. "Steampunk Revolution" a song with a railroad beat and pretty violins tells you to 'double back to 1886' in order to get your kicks. The band has retained some of its old industrial and metal sounds, like mechanical beats, virtuoso solos, and Brown's vocals, all of which mix well with the steam punk. If Abney Park has their way, you'll be playing your air violin and toasting to ye olden days throughout every bit of the energetic, steamy set.
