Along with the creators of the Tony-Award winning 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, City Arts & Lectures is proud to present A Spelling Bee for Cheaters, a benefit for programming at San Francisco tutoring center 826 Valencia. The Spelling Bee for Cheaters joins individual contestants against celebrity guests in a test of knowledge, grammar - and their ability to cravenly and shamelessly cheat. Local notables such as Michael Chabon, Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket), Lisa Brown, Adam Savage, and Thao Nyguen will be on hand to help contestants swindle their way to victory (and an almost embarrasingly large trophy.) The contestants have solicited donations from friends, colleagues, relatives and perhaps even total strangers to enable them to purchase "cheats" to use during competition. The more cheats the contestants acquire, the greater their chances of squashing the opposition. Best of all, every penny raised by the contestants -- and all net proceeds from ticket sales -- will support the free student programming offered by 826 Valencia.
826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco that is dedicated to helping students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Founded in 2002 by Dave Eggers and Ninive Calegari, 826 Valencia enlists its community of 1,700 volunteers to provide a full spectrum of programs to under-served students in the San Francisco Bay Area, including after-school tutoring, class field trips, after-school workshops, in-school tutoring and writing projects, college essay counseling, summer workshops, and programs for English language learners.
