San Francisco’s award-winning Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (LHT) will join 26 other African American theatre companies across the U.S. and Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in presenting simultaneous staged readings of "A Soldier’s Play" by Charles Fuller as this year’s Project1Voice staged reading fundraiser. Proceeds from LHT's third annual Juneteenth 1Voice 1Day 1Play benefit event will help support LHT's programming and operations expenses.
Lorraine Hansberry Theatre’s artistic director, Steven Anthony Jones, comes full circle to direct the reading. In 1981, Jones originated the role of Private James Wilkie in the original cast of A Soldier’s Play, directed by Douglas Turner Ward, at New York’s seminal Negro Ensemble Company.
Jones is thrilled that Project1Voice has chosen "A Soldier’s Play" for 2013. He has fond memories of his time with the original cast. Says Jones, “Not only was I working with a great and talented director, cast and crew, but we all knew, even then, that A Soldier’s Play was destined to become a classic of the American stage.”
LHT's cast for "A Soldier's Play" staged reading includes Jones and features Carl Lumbly (Cagney & Lacy, Alias, Southland), Aldo Billingslea, Michael J. Asberry, Nick Childress, Jeff Garrett, Darryl V. Jones, Rafael Jordan, David Moore, Patrick Russell, David Westley Skillman and Reggie D. White.
In "A Soldier’s Play," a black sergeant cries out in the night, "They still hate you," then is shot twice and falls dead. Set in 1944 at Fort Neal, a segregated army camp in Louisiana, Charles Fuller's forceful drama—which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982—tracks the investigation of this murder. A "Soldier's Play" is more than a detective story: it is a tough, incisive exploration of racial tensions and ambiguities among blacks and between blacks and whites that gives no easy answers and assigns no simple blame.
Project1Voice's(www.project1voice.org)1Voice 1Play 1Day event is a national day of celebration that not only honors a great the seminal work of a great playwright, but also highlights African-American theatre companies across the country and in South Africa to help preserve the legacy of African-American theatres and playwrights.
