A Place of Her Own

SEE EVENT DETAILS
A Place of Her Own features more than 30 artworks and large-scale installations that excavate the vibrant dreams and hopes of women. On view with accompanying public programming November 19 to December 11, 2015, the exhibition amplifies the voices of 20 women artists with diverse cultural perspectives ranging in age from 21 to 89 years old. Each piece in the exhibition is a courageous visual answer to the question, “If you had a place of your own, what would it be?” Curated by Cynthia Tom, A Place of Her Own is the first of three SOMArts Commons Curatorial Residency exhibitions in the 2015–2016 season. Leading up to this exhibition, Tom facilitated a number of workshops with artists based on healing art practices that stoked the ideas realized in the exhibited artworks. Visitors are invited to participate in three intuitive, art-making workstations to join the journey and create their own small artworks. All events will feature a pop-up, holiday artists’ market.

EVENTS

• Opening Reception, November 19, 6-9pm

See the dreams of women brought to life through soul-inspiring sound sculpture, a forest of giant intuitive paintings, and an enormous landscape of hand-built chairs and ladders. A Place of Her Own, November 19–December 11, features more than 30 artworks and large-scale installations that offer courageous visual answers to the question, “If you had a place of your own, what would it be?” At the opening reception on Thursday, November 19, 6–9pm, visitors will have the opportunity to mingle with artists and curators to learn the story of arts-based transformation and healing that inspired the exhibition and to join the journey through participation in three self-guided, art-making workstations. • Artist-led Tour, December 6, 1-4pm

During an afternoon stroll through the exhibition on Sunday, December 6, 1–4pm, selected artists will share their intimate stories leading to their visual answers to the question, “If you had a place of your own, what would it be?” Visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions about anything that puzzles them or that has aroused their curiosity as well as the opportunity to initiate their own journey through three self-guided workstations in which they can create small artworks in response to prompts about their personal experiences and aspirations. This event will feature a pop-up, holiday artists’ market.

• Closing Reception, December 11, 6:30-8:30pm

A Place of Her Own closing celebration and community potluck, Thursday, December 10, 6:30–8:30pm, offers an opportunity for community celebration to recognize the journey of exhibiting artists as well as the journey of the exhibition’s community impact.
