The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrates the year 1913 and its developmental contributions to motion pictures with a selection of films from A Century Ago: The Films of 1913. Focusing on “The Final Reign of One-Reel Films,” this program will spotlight a selection of short films reflecting a typical night at the movies 100 years ago, just as longer “feature” length films of three or more reels were beginning to catch on. Movie stars and genres had taken full form to create a bustling business for the relatively young, but rapidly expanding motion picture phenomenon, marking 1913 as a turning point for movies as we’ve come to know them.
