Last Night a DJ Saved my Life
When have you ever peeped a fly sister smashing classic records all night long with shine, authority and pure flair? That baddest mamma jamma is Bay Area veteran lady DJ Zita, who brings her unforgettable mix of versatility and femininity to the turntables every time she puts needle to vinyl. And she does spin strictly vinyl. Her sound spans the eras and blends genres of body-rockin' music; she'll seamlessly segue from boombox classic hip hop to mothership trunk funk, spin smooth R&B treats along with timeless soul classics, flip reggae dancehall riddims, throwback to 80s pop freestyle, all the while rocking a gardenia in her hair. The BBC Sessions
A cherry-picked collection of this indie-rock band’s best, the two-disk BBC Sessions will be snapped up by devoted fans in no time. Whilst the song selection doesn’t divert much from the original studio recordings, it’s always nice to have your favorites play one after the other -- making the BBC Sessions the ultimate "best of". Having said that, there are a few rarities from a 2001 session including “Shoot The Sexual Athlete” and “Nothing in the Silence” which was sung by Isobel Campbell shortly before she left the band. An Exchange of Political Posters between artists from the Bay Area and artists from Puerto Rico
In the past eight years, we have seen America steered wildly off-course: Abu Ghraib. Guantánamo. The Patriot Act. The War on Terror. An erosion of environmental policy. We voted in the candidate for change, the candidate that repudiated the Bush Doctrine, but where does that leave us? What is the state of our country, our democracy, our politics? The Art of Democracy is a national art coalition that aims to expand the dialogue on these questions. More

In a city obsessed with all things culinary, it seems strange that we didn’t have a book store devoted to the topic of food before, but we do now. Just opened this past weekend is Omnivore Books on Food, located on Cesar Chavez Avenue at Church Street in Noe Valley. More

The Last Gasp of an Action Hero
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
What would Jean-Claude Van Damme be without his roundhouse kicks? That’s the question JCVD, a loosely biographical slice of cinema vérité about the so-called Muscles From Brussels, dares to ask, and you might be surprised at the answer. More

Is That Your Final Answer?
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.
British Director Danny Boyle is a true chameleon. Unlike many other contemporary, indie directors he isn’t content sticking with one genre. Ever since he wowed audiences with Trainspotting, he has made the faux-horror classic 28 Days Later, the family crime drama Millions and the sci-fi, space thriller Sunshine. Now he brings us Slumdog Millionaire, a film set in India that follows the life of a boy from the slums. It’s not only one of the best films of the year, but it’s one of the best of Boyle’s already incredible career. More

Potrero Hill’s New Spot for Raw Fish, Small Plates and Sake
On a street with French, Mediterranean, Chinese, Southeast Asian and, of course, pizza, the only cuisine that’s been missing on Potrero Hill’s 18th Street corridor is Japanese, until this year -- when Umi opened its doors. A casual, sit-down sushi spot, the restaurant is a welcome addition to an already globally cuisine-rich street. More

Chicago-native Abraham Levitan may be better known as the lead singer of indie-soul group Baby Teeth. But while the group awaits the release of their third album, Levitan decided to break out on his own. Unfortunately, it’s not without its faults. More

If I were to make a mix tape of my high school years, not only would I need to buy a tape deck and some cassettes but I would also need to dig out my old tape box. And if I felt willing and emotionally stable enough to take a little trip back to 1992 and create a soundtrack to my awkward coming of age and self-conscious adolescent angst, Pavement would be a featured artist.
