About Equal Partners? How Dual-Professional Couples Make Career, Relationship, and Family Decisions
Many young professionals seek egalitarian partnerships in which both partners work for pay and share unpaid housework and childcare. Yet working couples' realities often deviate from this ideal, with women trading off employment for family care. Will contemporary young adults repeat this pattern, or will they come closer to achieving equality in work and family? Equal Partners? seeks to explore this question.
Drawing on six years of interviews with the partners in twenty-one different-gender couples, Jaclyn S. Wong documents how supportive workplaces, partners' steadfast gender-egalitarian attitudes, and partners' jointly coordinated actions all need to come together for couples to experience gender equality in work and family. This book offers a compelling study of the dynamics of couples in ambitious partnerships who aspire to equality as they navigate the external pressures that come with life planning.
About Dr. Jaclyn S. Wong
Jaclyn S. Wong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and a Faculty Affiliate of the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at the University of South Carolina. She graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a BA in Sociology and then completed her PhD in Sociology with a graduate certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Chicago. Her research uses interview and statistical methods to examine gender
inequalities in paid and unpaid work within and between couples and families over the adult life course. Her book, Equal Partners? How Dual-Professional Couples Make Career, Relationship, and Family Decisions is now available from University of California Press.

Eliza Brown is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Berkely. Brown received her PhD in Sociology from New York University in 2021. She uses qualitative methods, including ethnography, depth interviews, and discourse analysis to study reproduction. She is particularly interested in temporality and anticipation, the role of money in medical interactions, and how medical providers and patients communicate about chance and risk. She is currently writing a book on how fertility providers and patients negotiate the chance of twins as a byproduct of fertility treatments (under contract with University of Chicago Press).
