Established in 1999, by Founder and Artistic Director Micaya, The SF Hip Hop DanceFest has grown to be THE event that has put San Francsico on the map for presenting hip hop dance . Acknowledged as the FIRST festival dedicated specifically to hip hop dance, the DanceFest is a groundbreaking event, hosting companies from all over the globe. The DanceFest serves an important cross-section of the arts community, giving recognition to a rich and exciting dance form that has it’s roots in the Bay Area and is part of an international artistic movement.

The San Francisco Hip Hop DanceFest remains unique for its dedication to presenting the highest quality professional Hip Hop dance companies and for its forward-thinking curatorial focus. This legendary event offers professional Hip Hop dance companies the level of production, exposure, and acknowledgement that they urgently deserve, nurturing emerging artists and consistently contributing to the evolution of both Hip Hop and dance. With a record of eight years of sold-out performances, the DanceFest has developed a reputation for both quality and innovation.

Festival founder Micaya showed us hip hop from Montreal, Japan and France.
But the biggest spectacle of all came from San Francisco crew Mind Over Matter, prowling the stage in hot pink stilettos and serving up hip-hop high camp."
- San Francisco Chronicle

"The most unforgettable dance moment of 2006? Keep your white swans. For me, it’s no contest..."
- Allan Ulrich, Voice of Dance READ REVIEW IN FULL

"It takes a festival like Micaya's to show us - and challenge us to reconsider - just how diverse, amorphous and all-embracing hip hop can now be."
- Rachel Howard, Special to The Chronicle READ REVIEW IN FULL

"These choreographers had clear ideas of what they wanted, taking thematic and kinetic inspiration from a huge pool of possibilities and shaping it into theatrically viable expressions. Hip Hop to them is a tool, no longer an end itself. The festival impressed with the range of the thematic material choreographers chose to explore."
