6th Annual 50|50 Show

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The 6th Annual 50|50 Show at Sanchez Art Center

Yes, it’s back, the wonderful art extravaganza of the 50|50 Show! This is the sixth year in a row that Sanchez Art Center has asked artists to put their creativity to the test by creating one small artwork a day for 50 days. It’s a real challenge for the artists and a real boon to the Sanchez Art Center, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create community through art, as these small works are eminently affordable and have great appeal to the art-loving public.

The Sixth Annual 50|50 Show opens Friday, August 22, with a ticketed fundraiser preview from 6 to 7:30 pm, and a free reception for the public from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Preview tickets are $10 in advance from BrownPaperTickets.com (plus a small service fee), or $20 at the door. Preview ticketholders may reserve purchases early, and view the exhibition in its entirety and in a less crowded atmosphere. During the free reception, buyers may take their purchases home with them. Music will be provided by Lara Garner at the keyboard.

Juror Jack Fischer of Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco selected 69 artists from a pool of 175 applicants. The artists’ mediums range from painting, drawing, and printmaking to mixed media, photography, and ceramics. While each artist has focused on a single theme, many have experimented with combining various mediums. There’s some wonderful work using nontraditional materials—Linda Tapscott’s explorations of movement in space using wire mesh, and Cheryl Coon’s biological abstractions created from plastic, fiber, and ceramic. We’ve got Japanese gumball machines (gashopan) transformed into art by Carolyn Tillie. We’ve got beautiful thread drawings by Anna Magnani Rosenman. We’ve got delicate botanical cyanotypes from Jennifer Alpaugh (who returns for the sixth year!).

It’s a visual feast! If you do the math, you’ll realize that this one exhibit comprises over 3,000 artworks! No wonder it fills all three galleries at Sanchez Art Center. The concept was brought to Pacifica by Sanchez studio artist Robert Dvorak, who had experienced a 50|50 Show at the 20th Street Art Gallery in Sacramento, and we are all the richer for it!

After the Grand Opening on August 22, galleries are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm, through Sunday, September 28. Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd., Pacifica, California, about 1.5 miles east of Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean.
