Description
GirlSource Celebrates It’s Ten Year Anniversary and
The Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of The W.A.V.E. Awards

Local San Francisco non-profit organization, GirlSource announces their 10 year anniversary of providing leadership, educational and employment opportunities to low income young women in San Francisco. Their anniversary coincides with their annual benefit and luncheon, The W.A.V.E. Awards which is also celebrating its 25th anniversary. The W.A.V.E. Awards will take place on Thursday May 8th at 11am at the Westin St Francis in Union Square (335 Powell St, San Francisco) and will pay tribute to three outstanding women over the age of seventy years old.

The W.A.V.E. Awards honors women of achievement, vision and excellence who have aspired to great heights in their lives. This year honorees include Reverend Glenda Hope, who has worked diligently with the tenderloin community to fight homelessness and prostitution and who is the executive director of San Francisco Network Ministries; Concepcion (Concha) Saucedo, M.,PhD who has been at the forefront of integrating traditional healing with western health practices in psychology; and Ethel Seiderman who is a crusader for justice and humanity and cofounder of the Parent Services Project in San Rafael.

Guests of the W.A.V.E. Awards will enjoy a cocktail reception, luncheon, and the presentation of the W.A.V.E. multimedia project which is produced by three exceptional GirlSource Alumnae. The three young women, Cassandra James, Christina Lopez and Alice Rostran are former GirlSource participants who are still strongly connected to the organization that has supported them in pursuing their dreams. These young women will interview and research the three 2008 W.A.V.E. honorees and assist with the development of a video clip of the honoree interview to present at the award ceremony.

Since 1998, GirlSource has been providing meaningful employment and leadership opportunities for low-income, high-school-age girls in San Francisco. GirlSource’s paid job program offers technology training, supplemented by individual guidance to help girls finish high school, go on to college, and launch their careers. GirlSource believes that to truly affect the precarious lives of low-income teenage girls, they must receive continual, personalized support throughout their high school years. Former GirlSource participants have been hired as peer educators, applying their job and leadership skills to help other teens from their own neighborhoods or backgrounds. Of the girls who go through our programs each year, many speak English as a second language, and few have little chance of going to college. Long-term commitment to each young woman requires a significant investment of time and resources, however, results indicate that a multi-year approach has a profound effect on their academic goals and future options by equipping them with the life, leadership, and job skills they need to succeed.
