The California Academy of Sciences’ NightLife LIVE Series Explores New Depths

There’s never a dull moment around the California Academy of Sciences, and when summer and fall kick in, the museum’s Thursday NightLife program turns it up even further with its Nightlife LIVE music series. For Nightlife LIVE, music promoters who know what’s up (ahem, Treasure Island Music Festival and Outside Lands, for starters) have been invited to curate live music performances and DJ sets. The August 4th event will continue with UK electronica artist Lapsley, followed by White Fence in September, and Dan Deacon in October.

Head down to the aquarium to check out the brand new exhibit Twilight Zone: Deep Reefs RevealedThe Academy’s latest addition offers a rare look into the mysterious depths of the ocean’s “twilight zone.”Scientists know less about this area of the ocean than the surface of the moon—and the Academy makes it possible to see this exhibit with your pals, for no added admission cost, all while sipping a drink.

In addition to interactive activities and science displays that are both creepy and cool, NightLife LIVE also provides a perfect venue to showcase local artists and vendors. While at the museum be sure to stop by the outdoor sculpture displays curated by Betty Bigas of Public Works’ Roll Up Gallery, check out custom NightLife LIVE screenprints designed by San Franpsycho, dig through record crates with Amoeba (dubbed the world’s largest independent record store), and browse local art prints, enamel pins and zines at the Paint Pens Collective pop-up shop.

Live performances take place on the outdoor West Garden stage. Head outside early to experience interactive art installations, marvel at out-of-this-world video projections, and get hands-on with weekly science side shows—all while exploring cutting-edge exhibits with over 38,000 live animals.

Grab a drink at bars around the museum. Each week features a curated menu of wine, beer, and cocktails inspired by science.
