Fat Wreck Chords finally settled on a San Francisco venue to kick off their twenty-fifth anniversary as Thee Parkside will host the first day of a three day punk rock extravaganza, “Fat Wrecked for Twenty Five Years,” on Friday August 21st, followed by two days of punk rock mayhem on the 100 block of Wisconsin St and 16th St.
Mike Burkett (AKA Fat Mike- lead singer and bassist of NOFX and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes) started Fat Wreck Chords in 1990 with his wife in San Francisco. Built on an unusual foundation, they conducted their label by signing bands to a one record contract, giving bands more flexibility to work with other labels. Since their inception they have released records by such esteemed and influential punk rockers Good Riddance, Descendents, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, The Loved Ones, Screeching Weasel, Propagandhi, Rise Against, Lagwagon, Strung Out, No Use for a Name, Less Than Jake, Against Me! and Anti-Flag.
The festivities begin on Friday August 21st with an intimate screening of NOFX’s Backstage Passport 2, a documentary that follows the band through Central and South America playing music and doing drugs, followed by a Q&A with NOFX. There will also be surprise and unannounced bands playing Friday night. The next day the chaos will spill out into the streets with bands old and new associated with Fat Wreck Chords playing from noon to 8 pm, including Tilt, who have reformed for this event. The show is not all ages, but welcomes children 6 and over.
While the anniversary tour stretches out to various parts of the country, San Francisco was the last venue to be released. Fat Mike was a little in a awe of his label’s survival and longevity, posting to his Twitter “Wait, if I started Fat Wreck Chords when I was 23… And it’s 25 years old… Shit, I’m over 40.”
