Liquid Gold Bottle Shop and Tap Room to Open on Nob Hill

San Francisco’s beer boom continues with the opening of Liquid Gold, a new tap room and bottle shop on lower Nob Hill.

After months wrangling through the permitting process while the location was essentially ready to open, Liquid Gold will make its debut with a grand opening on Oct. 25, adding to the list of numerous beer bars and breweries opening in San Francisco in recent years.

The space across the street from Trader Joe’s on Hyde Street will have 30 taps with about 20 seats and a communal table that sits next to a wall of coolers with beer available for off-site purchase.

The focus is on locally sourced beers, but owner Tim Lee says he also plans to stock rare and unique beers from throughout the U.S. and, perhaps, a few international beers.

“We’re going to be heavily focused on beers made here in the city, wine and mead, which is a honey wine,” Lee says. “We’ll also have mostly domestic specialty beers—primarily California but beers from other states, as well.”

Lee, a native of San Francisco, found a passion for beer as a home brewer in his Sunset District neighborhood. Liquid Gold is his his first venture as a small business owner.

“Being born raised in the city, I have a lot of pride, and I wanted to really feature the city’s history,” he says. The mostly gray and black interior reflects this with a large-format historic map of San Francisco, a “415” glass painting and other aesthetic nods to San Francisco.

While several other beer destinations have opened in this part of San Francisco—beer bar Hopwater is within walking distance and Mikkeller is further down the hill—Liquid Gold is the only bottle shop in the area where one can stop and have a pint and pick up a bottle to take home.

“If you don’t have time to hang out,” Lee says. “You can pick up something and take it home, but of course, people will be able to drink here, as well.”

Lee expects a lot of changeover with beers available on draft and at the bottle shop.

“When it comes to specialty, limited beers, it’s based on what you can source,” Lee says. “Something that we have on draft may not be available in a bottle and vice versa. It could be changing every day.”
