It’s about to get funky in the Tenderloin this weekend with Lyrics Born and the Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste joining UK jazz-funk band New Mastersounds for a two-day concert to benefit the homeless.

“The Payback” starts tonight at Great American Music Hall with East Bay rapper Lyrics Born joining the New Mastersounds and the Nth Power, a soul band making its San Francisco debut. The party continues on Saturday with Modeliste, arguably one of the funkiest drummers on the planet, with the same performers minus Lyrics Born.

The concert was organized by music-focused nonprofit Positive Legacy and New Mastersounds guitarist Eddie Roberts, a former Tenderloin resident who saw first-hand the daily struggles of homeless and poverty-stricken residents of the TL.

All proceeds will benefit Compass Family Services, a nonprofit that helps homeless families throughout the Bay Area.
