The invention of agriculture enabled the human population to expand from 10 million to 7 billion. Historically, crop yields have kept up with population growth by farmland expansion and by agricultural advances, but further population growth to the predicted 10 billion by 2050 cannot be sustained at the current level of productivity, a problem made worse by climate change. Integrated approaches will be needed to meet these challenges.
