Bay Area to Host Super Bowl 50 in 2016
Not only are the San Francisco 49ers getting a new stadium in Santa Clara, but the Bay Area will be hosting Super Bowl 50 as announced on Tuesday by the National Football League.
As one of two finalists, the Bay Area’s bid gained major traction over the last few weeks when Florida legislators passed on approving a measure that would have opened up the possibility of using taxpayer dollars for $350 million in renovations at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.
The 49ers new home in Santa Clara, Levi’s Stadium, is under construction right now and is scheduled to open for the start of the 2014 season. The $1.2 billion state-of-the-art facility will seat 68,500 and will include plenty of technology – from solar panels to a green roof and stadium-wide Wi-Fi.

Although the game will be held in Santa Clara, the Bay Area Super Bowl bid committee is promising the event will have a Bay Area-wide feel – from Napa all the way down to Monterey. San Francisco is expected to be the center of much of the NFL Experience, hosting many of the events leading up to the game.
The Bay Area last hosted the Super Bowl in 1985 as the game was held at Stanford Stadium.
