SF Beer Week Highlights

Over the span of 10 days, Bay Area beer lovers will have over 300 unique events to choose from across the region, all part of SF Beer Week 2013. We put together  a guide with highlights from each day of the event.

SF Beer Week Celebration (Friday, February 8) – Over 70 Northern California breweries will be on hand to kick off SF Beer Week at it’s opening celebration. Held at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco, many of the best local breweries will be joined by smaller nanobrewers, all of whom will be pouring classics and new beers. Food will be provided by several artisan producers and a partnership with Noise Pop means good music throughout the evening. The Concourse Exhibition Center is located at 620 7th Street (at Brannan) and the event is from 6:00-10:00 p.m. Cost is $75 + fees.

Double IPA Festival (Saturday, February 9) – Over 60 double and triple IPA’s will be on tap at this event. This was the original kickoff to SF Beer Week, first held 13 years ago. This year it will be held at the Bistro in downtown Hayward. Along with beer, there will be a professional competition, cheese tastings, live music and a BBQ. The Bistro is located at 1011 B Street in Hayward. Cost for the event, which runs from 11am to 6pm., is $50.

Speakeasy’s Sunday BBQ, Release of Payback Smoked Porter (Sunday, February 10) – In honor of Speakeasy Ales & Lagers brand new tap room (opening scheduled for February 9), the brewery will be releasing the Payback Smoked Porter—the first in a series of limited release adaptations of Speakeasy’s Payback Porter. The Smoked Porter will have toasty flavors of barbecue and to go along with beer, food truck The Rib Whip will be dishing out its version of Midwest-style BBQ. The event is free and runs from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Speakeasy Ales & Lagers is located at 1195 Evans Avenue in San Francisco.

21st Amendment Library Stash Tasting (Monday, February 11) – 21st Amendment Brewery is opening up its stash of cellared beers, along with other great selections from local breweries for a vintage tasting. The brews will include: multiple years of Lower De Boom Barley Wine, Red Giant, Monk’s Blood among others. No word yet on the price for the event, which runs from 7pm to 10pm. 21st Amendment is located at 563 2nd Street in San Francisco.

Oyster & Beer Extravaganza (Tuesday, February 12) – Magnolia Gastropub & Brewery is hosting its 4th annual celebration of oysters and beers. Along with releasing the latest batch of its Oysterhead Stout (brewed with four bushels of Hog Island oysters), along with a selection of other carefully curated oyster stouts, Magnolia will be offering a special menu featuring a variety of oysters, both raw and cooked. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and there will be a la carte pricing. Magnolia Gastropub & Brewery is located at 1398 Haight Street in San Francisco.

Cellar to Remember (Wednesday, February 13) – An event combining beer and a celebration of the San Francisco Giants, Cellar to Remember will honor the recent World Series winning seasons for the Giants (2010 and 2012) along with beers from those years. The first 60 guests at Public House to purchase a beer will receive a free tour of AT&T Park. Among the beers being poured – the 2010 SN 30th Fritz and Ken, Jack and Ken, Bigfoot, Hebrew Rejewvenator and the 2012 Alagash Fluxus, Deschutes Black Butte XXIV and Stone 12-12-12. The event, from 4:00-10:00 p.m., is free. Public House is located at 24 Willie Mays Plaza in San Francisco.

Spin the Bottle NightLife (Thursday, February 14) – Beer Week celebrates Valentine’s Day with several special events on February 14, including a special night under the green roof at the California Academy of Sciences. Guests will be able to taste their way through a number of local beers (including Almanac Beer’s Biere de Chocolat), Center for Sex and Culture founders Carole Queen and Robert Lawrence will talk in a forum setting and sweet treats will be available from Whole Foods along with music and arts and crafts. The event is $12 and runs from 6pm to 10pm p.m. The California Academy of Sciences is located at 55 Music Concourse Drive in San Francisco.

Almanac Butchers & Beers (Friday, February 15) – A celebration of beer and meat, Almanac Beer and 4505 Meats are joining together for this event. Guests will be able to enjoy unlimited beer tastings from seven local breweries, pork treats from the 4505 Meats teams, a whole pig breakdown and butchery demo from Ryan Farr, a silent auction for charity of the resulting pork cuts and desserts from some of the best vendors at the New Taste Marketplace. All proceeds are being donated to The Food Pantry. Tickets are $60 and the event, from 6:00-9:00 p.m., takes place at St. Gregory’s Church at 500 De Haro Street.

North Beach 7 BY 7 (Saturday, February 16) – Ending Beer Week with a pub crawl of sorts seems just about perfect. North Beach bars The Boardroom, Tope, Rogue, O’Reilly’s, Amante, Tupelo and The Northstar will be featuring beers from Anchor Steam, Magnolia, Speakeasy, 21st Amendment, Pacific Brew Labs, Lagunitas and Schmaltz, with three tastings at each bar. The beers offered are expected to be rare and limited editions from each brewery. Brewers will also be on hand at each bar. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door (Northstar Café on the day of the event) and guests will get a passport and wristband for discounted beer flights. Proceeds will be donated to No Boundaries Animal Rescue. The event is from 2pm to 7pm. Northstar Café is located at 1560 Powell Street in San Francisco.

Celebrator Beer News 25th Anniversary Party (Sunday, February 17) – The Celebrator Beer News will be celebrating 25 years of publication with a brewer’s party. A group of some 20 breweries all over 25 years old will be featured along with more than 30 other participating breweries. Celebrator beer writers will be on hand along with beer industry luminaries, including pioneer figures in the craft beer movement. Catering is being handled by the Marriott Hotel. The event is from 4:30pm to 8pm at the Oakland Convention Center Marriott Hotel. Tickets are $55, $80 for VIP entrance an hour early. The Oakland Convention Center Marriott Hotel is located at 1101 Broadway in Oakland.
