Joker, an English dubstep producer from Bristol who mixes booming funk influences and video game chiptune to create his own branded UK club sound known succinctly as “purple,” held court at 1015 Folsom last night.

1015 is broken into several rooms to host multiple artists, but on this night, only the first and upper floors were open to visitors. The luminescent roof on the uncrowded first floor served as a welcome environment for Plastician, who started the night with various grime and electronic hip-hop beats. Around midnight, Joker began his set on the darkened second floor with a mellow jazz introduction, but immediately thereafter the scene turned into a bouncing club atmosphere thanks to consistent bangers that he elected to throw down.

The audience exhaustively cheered during his classic tracks “Slaughter House,” On My Mind” and “The Vision,” but sadly the latter lacked Jessie Ware’s sexy vocals. His bass-heavy rendition of “Ni**as in Paris” was a crowd favorite. The ideal combination of Joker’s pulsing purple sound and the outlandish yet enthralling aura of 1015 caroused most of the evening’s participants and made for an exceptional prelude for the weekend.
