Zine Design Workshop With DIY Hero V. Vale
Contrary to popular belief blogging didn’t kill the zine; the paper zine persists even in the digital age, uniting and creating new underground communities across time and space bound together by their mutual interests.
For those who’ve always wanted to learn a little about typography and how to make a DIY zine, the legendary zine-master and publisher of alternative books and magazine, V. Vale, will be hosting a workshop at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive.
A big fan of Claude Levi-Strauss and Marcel Mauss, V. Vale got his start capturing the burgeoning Bay Area punk scene in the 1970s through his zine Search and Destory, funded by Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and published by City Lights Books.
V. Vale went on to found lead RE/Search Publications and continued his effort to archive counterculture movements and preserve alternative oral history coupling his interests– which include punk and industrial music, the writing of J.G. Ballard and William S. Burroughs, feminism, and independent film making–to his life work.
