Celebrate the Anniversary of Some Great Local Parties
Instead of going out to see the latest EDM sensation, maybe it’s time to take a break and recognize local parties thrown by local DJs that know how to have a good time with great music. First off, we have Tropicana’s Three-Year Anniversary Wednesday and Thursday at Madrone, followed by Sweater Funk’s Four-Year Anniversary on Saturday at Elbo Room!
First off, we have Tropicana, the long-running salsa/cumbia Latin dance party at Madrone. Wednesday will feature the talents of MOM DJs Gordo and Timo along with DJ Stepwise. DJ Stepwise is a producer/DJ based out of San Francisco via Buenos Aires, Argentina, and recently completed a tour in South America. Joining them will be resident DJs: Don Bustamante, Apocalypto , Mr. E and Señor Saenz. There will also be live Bossa Nova starting at 6pm from Tom Lattatand. Food trucks will be there early in the evening as well.
On Thursday, they will celebrate with a very special performance from Orquesta Borinquen. Lead by Bill Ortega Sr. and directed by his son Bill Ortega Jr., their music ranges from salsa dura to salsa romantica in an authentic fashion, with vocals from lead singer Carlos Xavier. Also featured are piano player Marco Montoy and percussionists Aaron Routtenberg, Eric Mendez and Ricky Gomez. Gil Roman will be featured on bass, along with a four-piece horn section featuring Freddy Martinez and Joe Camacho. That’s a full band, and you can see it all for just $5. On Saturday, celebrate four years of basement boogie with the ENTIRE Sweater Funk Crew! Come check out this all-vinyl night with the group coming in from all parts of the nation. See why that this night is considered quite magical with feel-good jams and funk from all eras. From slow funk to modern R&B, this night aims to showcase how positive a night of music with friends can truly make the week better in every way.
