SF Design Week Continues
San Francisco Design Week 2012 kicked off Monday, and though it’s almost over, there are still a few cool events.
How to Make a Book with Steidl
Gerhard Steidl is the subject of How to Make a Book with Steidl, a 2010 German documentary screening at YBCA Thursday June 14 at 5:30pm and 7:30pm. Steidl has been working as a designer and printer for nearly four decades. Independently owned by Steidl and operated by him along with 35 employees, Steidl Publishers designs, edits, prints, binds, markets and distributes books on photography, fashion and art.
Presiding over and executing the entire process is a rarity in these times; this German documentary offers a glance into Steidl’s world. In addition to working with many renowned photographers, Steidl designs and prints (everything from fashion show admission tickets to catalogs) for Chanel, Fendi and Yohji Yamamoto to name a few. Also included in his catalog is Chanel – Her Life by Justine Picardie, a biography on Coco herself with drawings by Karl Lagerfeld.
A must for anyone with interests in publishing, books, photography or fashion. Admission is $8.
SF Design Week 2012 Runway Show
This Saturday, the first annual SF Design Week 2012 Runway Show takes over Astro Studios. Hosted by the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance (SFFAMA) and Astro, the fashion show will feature retailers ROGUE and JY+JZ, as well as local fashion designers.
As implied by “first annual”, it’s the first fashion show to be included to AIGA’s annual SF Design Week. On the runway will be fashions from SF designers Audrey Szeto, Jennifer Schmidt and Scott Ian McFarland, the last of whom has shown at New York Fashion Week and is preparing to launch his own knitwear line.
Presales are sold out; tickets at the door are $20 and dress code is “dress to impress”.
