Album Preview and Release Party: Lazer Sword's 'Memory'

At the end of April, former San Francisco residents, Lando Kal and Low Limit, have put out their second full length as Lazer Sword on Modeselektor’s Monkeytown imprint. They will be celebrating its release as they headline Icee Hot this Sunday, May 27 at the Public Works Oddjob loft along with DJ Stingray and support from Icee Hot residents.

Memory seems like a logical progression for Lazer Sword given their latest solo works, although it sounds much different than their self-titled full-length. For this album, they pick up the tempo and emphasize house and UK futurism without abandoning their penchant for leftfield hip hop or skimping on the low-end. What results is a package of tracks that is fully energized; overall, it feels juke-like, but smoothed out around the edges so that it never becomes too aggressive.

This album also features guest appearances from producers known for their experimental tendencies, including Jimmy Edgar, whose vocals appear on “Let’s Work,” and Machinedrum, on “CHSEN.”

It’s worth a listen, especially if you’ve got a soft spot for the eclectic rave and deep bass that Icee Hot parties turn out. And if it suits you, don’t forget to catch them at the Public Works Oddjob loft with the rest of the Icee crew.

Lazer Sword play Icee Hot Sunday, May 27. Tickets are $5 before 10:30pm and $10 after at the door. More info here.
