Silversun Pickups to Play Amoeba In-Store on May 9

Five years after Carnavas, the debut album that brought the Silversun Pickups to alternative rock airwaves with the hit single “Lazy Eye,” and three years after their sophomore album Swoon, the Silversun Pickups are returning to the scene with Neck of the Woods. The band is celebrating the new album, to be released today, with an in-store performance at Amoeba Music on Haight Street on Wednesday, May 9.

Emerging from the Silver Lake music scene in Los Angeles, the Silversun Pickups exploded in 2006, attracting listeners and radio airplay with their emotionally evocative, layered landscapes. The Los Angeles based indie rock band’s sound carries a distorted darkness that has earned them comparison to other well-known alt rock bands like The Smashing Pumpkins. Not to be overlooked is lead vocalist Brian Aubert’s haunting, androgynously pitched vocals, which lend a complicated perspective to the band’s sound.

The success of the Silversun Pickup’s first two albums gained them a slot on the lineup of Coachella 2007 and several of their tracks have been ranked on the Billboard 200. With Neck of the Woods affirming the band’s continuing resonance in the alt-rock music scene, the band has also confirmed that they will be playing on the main stage of Sasquatch Music Festival later this year.

The Silversun Pickups’ show at Amoeba Music on May 9 is an opportunity to hear the band perform for free, in a unique space among stacks of CD’s and records. The show starts at 6pm, and as Amoeba’s free shows often draw a large crowd, arriving early is advised. Check out the first single from Neck of the Woods, “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings),” below.
