Yes 49ers fans, it could really be true. The San Francisco 49ers are a finalist for the services of prized free agent quarterback Peyton Manning.
ESPN first reported on Friday that Manning worked out for 49ers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Tuesday at Duke University. Impressed by the workout, the team sent a doctor to Durham to give Manning a physical on Wednesday.
Manning worked out for one of the other finalists, the Denver Broncos, on Friday. The other team involved in the Manning sweepstakes is the Tennessee Titans. The quarterback has obvious ties to the area as he attended the University of Tennessee.
San Francisco has not been mentioned as a possible landing spot for the All Pro quarterback.
And what of San Francisco’s own free agent quarterback Alex Smith? Well part of the storyline is that Smith and Manning share the same agent. Manning has not set a deadline for an announcement as to which team he will join next season.
