This week’s best theater events include the opening of The Right Thing, closing of of Scorched, and a unique first anniversary theater benefit for Japan.

After a successful west coast premier earlier last month at the A.C.T., Scorched, featuring Academy Award nominee David Strathairn, will close this Sunday. The story is that of two twins who, after their mother’s death, are given a mysterious set of letters and clues that reveal an unimaginable family secret. If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure you catch it sometime between Wednesday and Sunday.

On Thursday, The Right Thing, a play by AJ Baker, opens at Thick House. In the play, a female CEO gets fired based on allegations of sexual harassment, and fights to get her job back in intense mediation. The play is presented as part of 3Girls Theatre‘s Women’s History Month-long festival of new works by Bay Area female playwrights.

Sunday marks the first anniversary of the earthquake that hit Japan last year. In remembrance, theaters across the nation are joining in the Shinsai (which means “great quake” in Japanese) Japanese Theater Benefit. Locally, the Theatre of Yugen will host a several 10 minute plays and songs, that were commissioned from and donated by prominent American and Japanese artists to be performed across the nation, this Sunday.
