Vetiver’s Guide to San Francisco

Vetiver front man Andy Cabic says much of the band’s latest album, The Errant Charm, was inspired by walks around his Richmond District neighborhood. We asked Cabic, who moved ot San Francisco in 1998, to elaborate with his guide to San Francisco.

Best meal for under $15?

Make it yourself.  Get great, fresh ingredients from a farmer’s market and a quality butcher and put a little time into it. If you’re gonna eat out, at that price, lately I’ve been impressed with Jannah on Fulton.  Their appetizers are all fantastic.

Favorite dive?

The Uptown

Favorite local venue to perform at?

Too many good ones.  A tie between the Great American Music Hall and The Independent.

Most memorable local show?

The 2006 Bridge School Benefit when I played with Devendra Banhart and Bert Jansch and met Neil Young.

Favorite SF Neighborhood outside of the one you live?

I live in the Richmond District, which I love, but my favorite neighborhood to walk around outside of my own is probably North Beach.

Best show you’ve attended in the Bay area?

Again, too many good ones.  Hearing Harry Partch’s compositions played live at the Yerba Buena Center back in 1999, as partbof their “Sounds Like Art” festival was pretty exceptional—that and Prince at the Paramount Theater, 2002.

Favorite local band?

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282.  There’s got to be a reunion sometime, right?

When seeking inspiration, go to:

Inspiration Point in the Presidio.  Then turn around and stare at Goldsworthy’s ‘Spire’ for a peak experience.

A perfect day and night in SF consists of:

A bike ride through Golden Gate Park with my sweetheart, some doubles tennis with buddies, caesar salad at Zuni, pop into Grooves on Market and have a look-see, happy hour on the patio at El Rio, swing by Adobe and say hey to Andrew, then off to a nice dinner and evening hang with friends over at Partisan Gallery.

If I wasn’t making music, I’d be:

Working at Aardvark Books.
