Literary Events: Love and Struggle, Go Fish, Connectome & More
This week’s best literary events include readings from David Gilbert, Mr. Fish, Maureen McHugh, Broke-Ass Stuart, and Sebastian Seung.
Political activist and current prisoner at Auburn Correctional Facility, David Gilbert, is celebrated for his appearance in the Academy Award nominated documentary, The Weather Underground. Now celebrate Gilbert‘s new memoir, Love and Struggle: My Life in SDS, The Weather Underground and Beyond, which launches this Thursday at Modern Times Bookstore.
This Saturday, Dwayne Booth (a.k.a. Mr. Fish) presents his graphic novel, Go Fish: How to Win Contempt and Influence People, at the Robert Berman/E6 Gallery. The Philadelphia-based illustrator and author is widely regarded for his witty text and imagery, which frequently flaunts the pages of Harper’s, Vanity Fair, and the like.
Also on Saturday, Writers With Drinks hits the Make-Out Room with author Maureen McHugh and local celeb Broke-Ass Stuart. Along with these headliners will be Keely Hyslop, Ayize Jama-Everett and Vanessa L. Pinto. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the SF Center for Sex and Culture.
On Monday, nerd out on breaking neuroscience as Sebastian Seung presents his new book, Connectome, at The Commonwealth Club SF. Seung, a neuroscientist at MIT, offers his theory, the science of Connectomics, which theorizes that identities are not only determined by our genes, but also by connections in our brains. Seung and his team are working to better understand disorders like autism and schizophrenia, but also normal cognitive functions like memory and intelligence.
