Sweet Treats for Valentine’s Day

If that special person in your life has a sweet tooth, there are several local options that go beyond the standard chocolate and flowers cliché for Valentine’s Day.

Chantal Guillon: Formerly known as Paulette, this Hayes Valley shop is now making all of its scrumptious macarons with organic ingredients and locally (they used to be shipped from Beverly Hills). The flavors vary from green tea to pistachio, passion fruit and salted caramel. Located at 437 Hayes Street.

Anthony’s Cookies: Anthony Lucas, owner of Anthony’s Cookies, has a pretty inspiring story. What started out as a side business of selling cookies out of his car as a student at San Francisco State has become what is now one of the most popular “dessert” shops in the city. Try the famed Cookies & Cream. Located at 1417 Valencia Street.

Kika’s Treats: Cristina Arantes started Kika’s Treats after working at restaurants and bakeries around San Francisco. Now, her chocolate-covered baked goods can be found at retailers around the Bay Area and even in other states (click here for a list of the retail locations). Having worked with La Cocina, 5 percent of the profits also go to the San Francisco non-profit.

Miette: With multiple locations in San Francisco and a shop/bakery in Oakland and Larkspur as well, Miette has a bevy of cakes, cookies and other confections to choose from. May I just say that the GIngersnaps are damn good! Located at the Ferry Building and at 449 Octavia Street in Hayes Valley.
