Muka: Taking Wine Underground

Muka

Call it an attempt at being classy, but I’ve become quite the sucker for wine bars. When dessert is added, I’m sold. Needless to say, when I first heard that Muka was opening underneath the Alliance Francaise de San Francisco, I had a hunch that I’d like it.

Muka bills itself as an underground wine bar and dessert lounge, a simple and fitting description of the dimly lit late night spot. A walk down steep stone stairs leads to a two-section bar that resembles more of a romantic bunker than a dungeon. The main room of Muka has small tables and tall communal ones. A screen on the rear wall shows movies that must be on a “wine and romance” list on Netflix. A smaller section of the bar, which can be closed off by drapes for an intimate event, has a few tables as well. Both the small and larger segments of Muka can be booked for private events.

While Muka prides itself on desserts, the bar also features several savory dishes to make a complete evening out: from quiche to foie gras to charcuterie and cheese plates, Muka offers plenty of acceptable dinner options.

Dessert, of course, is more of a staple. Menus are printed daily and feature items like chocolate lava cake, seasonal fruit tarts, and a signature beeramisu.

As far as libations go, wine and beer drinkers will find a happy place at Muka. The wine list features an assortment of reds, whites, sparkling and dessert wines; draft and bottle beers are available as well. All in all, a winning combination of sweet and savory small plates and drinks to top off a night out or to get one started.
