Schulzies Bread Pudding: Really, The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

Schulzies Bread Pudding

Move over cupcakes, a new dessert is coming soon to the San Francisco scene. In February, Schulzies Bread Pudding will be opening in Hayes Valley, serving chilled bread pudding in over one hundred flavors.

Schulzies comes from brother and sister team Jake Wall and Sarah Schulz. In typical sibling fashion, Jake listened to Sarah talk about wanting to start a business carrying a signature product for “long enough,” that when he visited her in Southern California in June 2010, he said that’s it, we’re doing this. By the end of summer, they had developed a business plan, recipes and even found a storefront across from Muscle Beach Venice.

Schulzies offers 108 flavors of bread pudding. “You can put everything on bread,” says Jake, “so you can put everything in bread.” The list includes fruit flavors (Applie Pie in the Sky, Kiwi-licious, Mango Tango), chocolate flavors (Brighten My Day Brownie, Bravo! Black Forest Cake, Magical Chocolate Malt), classic options (Timeless Toffee Crunch, Heavenly Hazelnut, Brown Sugar Brovado), and scratch-your-head choices (Gotta Have Guiness!, Duff’s Raspberry Peppercorn, Oh So Citrus Jalapeno). The most popular (and my favorite) flavor is Essential Earl Grey.

How is Schulzies different than traditional bread pudding? Jake explains that usually, bread pudding is served warm and crusty, and is typically vanilla with flavored sauces. Admittedly, I have never tried bread pudding for this exact reason, but I would describe Schulzies as an ice-cream-brownie.

The Hayes Valley store will serve as the Schulzies flagship location. The look and feel will be that of an old-fashioned ice-cream parlor, with custom handmade sodas. “We’ll have soda jerks—that’s what they’re really called—and you tell the jerk what flavors you want and they’ll mix it in. And you can mix your own flavors too,” says Jake. They’ll also be bringing a “new to the neighborhood” coffee which Jake promises will be a hit. They serve Blue Bottle at the Venice location, so I’m rather curious what the San Francisco store will offer. Jake also says they’ll be debuting the “official San Francisco style iced coffee” with secret ingredients.Schulzies

Another thing you can look forward to with Schulzies is their involvement in the community. Schulzies is a partner of Strive For _____, an organization which offers mentorship opportunities to foster youth. The bread pudding shop will hold fundraisers and offer job placement for Strive For _____ participants.

While the Schulzies grand opening isn’t until February 14, 2012, they will be doing a few pop-up events beforehand. On December 17, look for Schulzies at Isotope comic book store from 11am until 5pm. On January 18, they’re teaming up with Bloodhound for a Bread Pudding, Booze and Beer Pairing night.
