Literary Readings: Charles Boone, Mingmei Yip & Laura Johnston Kohl
This week’s top literary events include visual music, a little calligraphy, and a powerful Jonestown survival memoir.
This Wednesday evening, Arion Press will host the part visual, part literary, part musical event, How Music Looks: The Printed Page, with local composer Charles Boone. Boone is known for his music, but also for his scholarly work and revolutionary ideas about the relationship of (visual) musical notation.
Author, artist and musician, Mingmei Yip will discuss her latest work, Song of the Silk Road, at the Chinatown Branch Library this Saturday. After the lecture, Mingmei will demonstrate Buddhist calligraphy, followed by a signing.
If you’re itching for a good dose of eerie local history, catch cult survivor, Laura Johnston Kohl as she present her memoir, Jonestown Survivor: An Insider’s Look, next Tuesday at Books Inc. in Opera Plaza. Kohl moved to San Francisco in 1970, met Jim Jones made the pilgrimage to Guyana in 1977. This month marks the death many of her close and friends from the colony.
