Sometimes it’s hard to decide who to vote for. That’s why we’ve asked the seven local bands competing to perform live at The Lineup to answer these five questions. This is what Outlaws & Preachers, Plastic Villains and NanosauR had to say.

Outlaws & Preachers

What’s the one-sentence story behind your band name?

The human experience is born of contradiction, like a group with a radio appearance but no formal band name.

Name a Bay Area band (other than your own) people need to check out

immediately.

Do yourself a favor and check out The Greening. These guys really know how to bring it on. Amazing live energy and more snappy retro psych pop-rock goodness than you can shake a stick at.

What’s the strangest place your band has played a show?

On top of James’ Tenderloin rooftop. There were crack pipes on the ground, someone may or may not have fallen through a sunroof, and it was just insanity. The music was stripped down acoustic and unplugged though so it was beautiful kind of chaos.

If you could be any musician for one performance only (living or dead),

who would it be, where would you perform, and why?

Mario C: A cross between Tupac and Jim Morisson and Tom Waits. I loved the rebellious spirit of Jim Morrison’s poetry and the way he tapped into the other side. Tom Waits because he is a mythical character to me. He is the embodiment of unique and gritty. However, Tupac was the essence of a rebel, a real poet from the underdogs of society and warrior on top of that. There still hasn’t been an artist that presented that much raw energy with a message in my opinion. He was like a journalist in a sense telling you the story of the struggle of his people.

Name one song you wished you had written.

Mario C: All The World is Green by Tom Waits. It makes me feel like I’m drinking absinthe in France in the 1920’s and having a memory of caressing a woman that I used to be in love with. True romance gone. That’s the feeling I get from that song. If I have to completely honest though I would love to have written a song in Spanish by CALLE 13 called “Latino America.” Not only is it a revolutionary verbal painting of the struggle of Latin American people but it has become an anthem for a whole continent of the globe. And a rapper did it, who said rap couldn’t change the world!

Plastic Villains

What’s the one-sentence story behind your band name?

Plastic was a word that came to us from an Andy Warhol acid test, and walking on Haight one day we saw the word ‘villains’ – we put the two together, and in the end we didn’t hate it.

Name a Bay Area band (other than your own) people need to check out immediately.

HALF BLACK and Brian Jonestown Massacre.

What’s the strangest place your band has played a show?

In our bomb shelter.

If you could be any musician for one performance only (living or dead), who would it be, where would you perform, and why?

After thirty minutes of arguing, we’ve narrowed it down to either Led Zeppelin or Missy Elliot at Madison Square Garden.

Name one song you wished you had written.

Todd – Strawberry Fields (The Beatles)

Mike – Gimme Shelter (The Rolling Stones)

Chris – Sunshine of Your Love (Cream)

Alex – Juicy (The Notorious B.I.G.)

Jerry – Don’t You Want Somebody To Love (Jefferson Airplane)

NanosauR

What’s the one-sentence story behind your band name?

Nostalgia meets minimalism.

Name a Bay Area band (other than your own) people need to check out immediately.

Blackbird Blackbird

What’s the strangest place your band has played a show?

A corn field kegger party

If you could be any musician for one performance only (living or dead), who would it be, where would you perform, and why?

If I could be any performer I’d be Kanye when he performed like a jerk at the VMAs because it got the people going and I never heard the end of it.

Name one song you wished you had written.

Happy Birthday. Simply because it brings happiness to anyone you sing it to.
