Galleries: Ann Magnuson, Liu Yin & Monique Prieto

This week, women are shaking up the gallery scene with a new show, a lecture and a costume contest.

A costume party at SFMOMA? Yes, please! This Thursday, Ann Magnuson is hosting an extremely fabulous costume affair at the museum, where she’ll be brilliantly dressed as David Bowie — and will give a performance to match! Dress to impress.

Oh, Chinese Boy…Don’t Be Ashamed… Intrigued? So are we. In her premier US show, artist Liu Yin, explores the modern life’s little anxieties: love, nature, consumerism, etc. It’ll all be laid out through clever, quirky and cartoonish paintings at the Chinese Culture Center gallery from this Thursday through the end of December.

Next Monday, LA-based artist, Monique Prieto, will discuss her work at the SF Art Institute as part of their Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series. Prieto’s work combines abstract color with playful text. Her work can be seen at the MOCA in LA and the Whitney in NYC — her lecture in SF is free and open to the public.
