Mission District News

A look at the controversial name of a new eatery, supports grows in the Mission for one mayoral candidate and a visual look at the Occupy SF movement.

Those are some of the headlines from the folks at Mission Local.

Gunz and Bunz?… The changing name of a Mission eatery is causing quite a store. Mike’s Deli on 24th Street had struggled for some time, so owner Mike Jweinat decided to come up with some new sandwiches and a new name: Gunz and Bunz. But after hearing numerous complaints from locals, he decided the switch was a bit too much. Most complained that the name hit too close to home, especially with the number of violent crimes in the area recently. Jweinat said he was just looking for something catchy to attract more business and never meant it to be offensive. To be continued.

John Avalos gains more support… At a recent candidate’s forum featuring seven running for mayor, District 11 Supervisor John Avalos seemed to stand out when talking about immigration. Some 37 percent of San Franciscans are immigrants and the mostly Latino crowd at the event hosted by Mission Churches Local Organizing Committee were interested with what each candidate had to say about the important topic.

Occupy SF revealed… A great pictorial collection about the Occupy SF movement, which has taken to Justin Herman Plaza on the Embarcadero. As we have been reporting on, the movement remains strong with protesters fighting Wall Street and government.
