Thanksgiving Dinner at Greenburger’s

As October rapidly approaches, you might have your sights set on Halloween, but at Greenburger’s (518 Haight Street) it’s all about Thanksgiving–365 days a year. Inspired by every foodie’s favorite holiday meal, this creative and unpredictably eclectic eatery serves up a wholly original dish: Greenie’s Thanksgiving Dinner–a terrific taste of Turkey Day, with a twist.

When the large plate of food arrived at the retro, diner-style counter, it was somewhat surprising to see 4 panko-crusted croquettes, accompanied by a healthy portion of seasonal vegetables. The only element presented here that immediately evoked Thanksgiving was a small container of delicious, home-made cranberry sauce and, of course, the freshly-made, aromatic gravy gracefully steaming into the open air.

But after just one bite of this well-crafted concoction, all of the rich and familiar flavors of late November flooded my mouth with goodness. Little bits of buttermilk-marinated turkey were perfectly moist and complemented wonderfully by the velvety moosh of mashed potatoes, all set against the textural backbone of a crisp and savory bread stuffing and Panko crust.

Greeny’s Thanksgiving Dinner is a belly-filling triumph of fused flavors that is as comforting as it is original. This should ultimately come as no surprise considering that its creators, co-owners Stefanie Greenberg and her husband, chef Matthew Nudelman, are passionate about comfort food. When they opened Greenburger’s back in March, they set out to establish a friendly, neighborhood kitchen that serves up old-time favorites with a flair of indelible innovation.

More than just the juicy burgers and sustainably sourced ingredients implied by its name, Greenburger’s has tasty, regional menu items that you can’t find anywhere else in the city. Daily options range from Buffalo-themed Beef on Weck sandwiches to southwestern specialities like the New Mexican Hatch Chile Burger. Always in high-demand is their Buffalo Chicken Mac ‘n Cheese–a perfect pairing of two comfort food all-stars. Come on Wednesdays for their randomly rotating burger specials.

On any given day at Greenburger’s you’re bound to find something fresh, new and exciting. Perhaps it’ll be something you’ve never heard of before, but it’s guaranteed to be scrumptious and served with a smile.
