Mission District News

More violence in the streets of the Mission, a possible bright spot for the local economy and a look at cooking from SF Public School Gardens… here’s a look at Mission District news from Mission Local.

Two shootings, including another fatal… It has been a rough time in the Mission District as the area saw it’s third fatal shooting in the past week on Monday. This time, it happened on Camp Street, a quiet block near 16th and Guerrero streets. Witnesses said they heard an argument and then at least four shots fired. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not sure if the incident is gang-related. There was also another shooting on Wednesday near the 24th Street BART station as a man was shot in the hip. He was conscious before being taken to the hospital.

Heath Ceramics signs 30-year lease… The northeast side of the Mission is filled with a number of industrial buildings with little signs of life. But that could be changing as Heath Ceramics has signed a 30-year lease on a vacant industrial building on Florida and 18th streets. The move is expected to offer more than 100 new jobs in the coming years. The facility is expected to officially open sometime next year.

Salad and veggies from local gardens… A pretty cool video starring Viola Buitoni and her sone Ernesto and some of the dishes they can make from the gardens run by Urban Sprouts at the June Jordan School for Equity in Visitation Valley and the International Studies Academy in Potrero Hill.
