Preview: Suuns w/ Crystal Castles

If you were lucky enough to score a ticket for the sold-out Crystal Castle’s show at the Warfield this Friday, there’s a good reason to arrive early: Suuns.

In a recent article for SF Station, I describe the Canadian band as “an underwater, long-distance, drum and bass runner coupled with some Stooges-era guitar and Thurston Moore-like vocals thrown in for good measure.” If you’re not convinced by that, perhaps the band’s latest video will win you over.

Aside from the fact that I am convinced the only word chanted for the first minute and a half is “Toronto,” I have no clue what any of the other lyrics are, and I am not sure I fully get the concept behind the song, or the video for that matter. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t great to listen to and compelling to watch — or as one viewer commented “To be honest, this makes me want to do drugs and have sex.”

Though not my personal initial reaction the following questions did arise: Who is that lady? Where are her clothes? Why did they douse the drummer with talcum powder? We may never know the answers to these questions but I do feel the path to enlightenment begins with going to Warfield tomorrow night.
