East Bay Greenway

New York City may have the High Line, but the Bay Area may just get our own green trail called the East Bay Greenway, a 12-mile bike path under the elevated BART tracks between Oakland and Hayward. Utilizing the space underneath the tracks could not only provide bikers with a safe traveling route but also help revitalize the area along the proposed path.

The Oakland Tribune reports that, “The project — called the East Bay Greenway — would offer a landscaped, car-free corridor from just north of the Fruitvale BART station all the way just south past the Hayward station. A pedestrian trail also would be included in the project, which cuts through four jurisdictions — Oakland, San Leandro, unincorporated Alameda County and Hayward.”

Pending an environmental evaluation (and funding – at this point the project only has roughly $2.5 million yet the projected costs are $30-35 million), construction could begin in the summer of 2012.
