GLIDE Holds Annual Grocery Giveaway

Thousands braved the cold and wet weather on Friday, waiting in line for the annual free grocery giveaway at GLIDE in San Francisco.

Hundreds of volunteers helped fill the 5,000 bags full of groceries that were given away this year. GLIDE normally hands out 6,000 bags, but founder Reverend Cecil Williams said they just didn’t have the resources this year.

“People want food. People need to have food,” Williams said. “And we in America could solve the problem of poverty to a degree if we could just feed everybody.”

Each of the bags contained fresh poultry, potatoes, bread, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, beans and vegetables.

The annual grocery bag giveaway is just one of several events GLIDE hosts during the holiday season in an effort to help those in need.
