The way !!! gets you out on the dance floor is not through subtle suggestion—it’s more like a threat. Like a drunken stepfather, !!! stumbles into a track spitting fire, kicks you in the stomach with a steel-toed bass line, shatters a wall of psychedelic sound effects over your head, and bitches you out when you’re late for dinner.

For over a decade, !!!, who hail from Brooklyn-via-Sacramento, have been transforming head-bopping hipsters into gyrating John Travoltas through thumping bass lines, poppy drums, ominous synths, and snarly vocals. Along with bands such as LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture, !!! became formative members of the D.O.R. (dance-oriented rock) movement at a time when indie rock was sorely in need of some beat-centered music.

After their eponymous 2001 debut, the band released Louden Up Now (2004) and Myth Takes (2007)—all with slightly different casts and styles, but unified in their dedication to producing angular party jams. !!! are also regulars on the festival and tour circuits, where they’ve culled their live show skills alongside giants including the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Like any good artist peddling dance hits, !!! truly shines during its live act, where simple grooves devolve into sprawling, 20-minute-plus jams, with sweaty fans swaying feverishly in unison on the dance floor.
